The field of medicine is constantly in motion, and HackensackUMC has changed right along with it. We do not just provide world-class care when people are sick—we perform groundbreaking research right on campus to lead the way in the future of care.
Through our David & Alice Jurist Institute for Research, more than 1,000 patients were given the opportunity to participate in clinical trials—treatment they may not have been able to receive elsewhere. The Research Department has 610 active/open research studies in oncology, pediatrics, surgery, cardiology and obstetrics/gynecology; involving more than 355 HackensackUMC research investigators.
In addition to clinical trials and research, HackensackUMC recently developed the Office of Commercialization and Technology Ventures to provide leadership in the management of intellectual property and technology commercialization of HackensackUMC research innovation. Through our partnerships with organizations such as Georgetown University and Stevens Institute of Technology, we are able to collaborate and share resources for research and development – ultimately offering our patients new treatment options. Within a year, five invention disclosures from faculty have been received and evaluated and from these, four inventions have been found worthy of filing patent applications; an increase from one patent filed in 2012.
